Do we still need journalists in the age of social media?

hey there guys......this is my first blog post since I have started blogging I am very excited about it as I will be sharing my very own opinions as well as facts. Certainly hope you are also booming with excitement as I am. Well I’m guess you are still wondering about my first blogging topic, which is; Do we necessarily still need journalists in this age of Social media?   


Well honestly speaking from my own point of view journalists are no longer needed in this age of social media. I mean people have grown so much into making use of social media to gather information about what’s taking place around the world or even gather news about celebrities. I’m sure you guys even forget a newspaper still exists nowadays agree with me? Social media has basically become a primary source among us for instance let’s take for instance Miley Cyrus she always post about everything that happens in her life the good and the bad, she does not need a journalist to publicise her even Kim Kardashian (Kim Instagram pictures) for that matter these two are just so open about their personal lives kim and her naked shoots.

This just proves how journalists are phasing out I mean it’s practically obvious.


Journalism vs Social media
Journalist to me are just people who produce news to the public and also social events. Guys....on Social Media i myself can produce news or even upcoming events on Facebook and even Twitter for that matter. Social Media is taking over because of the Social media tools being used nowadays, like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram has empowered the public to share their voice over social media. Let alone with Social media I’m kept up-to-date with what is taking place around me I don't have to waste my money just to purchase a newspaper just to be kept in the LOOP as to what is happening around me Know I don’t. People do enjoy using social media it’s a fact it makes your life and my life easier.

    I must say, I totally agree with you on this one. Social Media has kind of taken the characteristics of a Journalist just that the Social Media publishes on the Internet instead of the newspapers, with apps such as Twitter, Facebook or Instagram you don't have to go to the shops to get a newspaper because Social Media has beaten the Journalists to it.

    Oh yes! Like iv'e beeen telling my oaks that newspapers i so 1999. The time is now. You just wake up, click and get news in your fingertips.

      To even click on that news update takes a matter of seconds ,i mean walking to the petrol garage to get a newspaper is so outdated ,just a waste of good money

    I agree social media is taking over but it does not really mean that journalism is not needed.think about the online newspaper,who do you think writes those news, the average "Joe" I think not.

      Journalism is still needed to a certain extent,the reason i say this its because not everybody is interested on reading newspapers a certain percentage maybe could be interested,But people seek automatic updates when it comes to news by making use of social media platforms.

      My opinion is that,the need of journalists and social media is a catch 22 because journalists do the research they put in the hard work for the public to get credible information that we sign off as news and on the other hand social media has made it much easier for the public to become journalists themselves because of the easy access and availability of news sources like facebook,twitter,instagram. These sources of instant information ranging from politics,music,film and sports make it effortless to remain informed about what is happening globally. The catch 22 is that we need both journalists as well as social media because they work hand in hand together to give us the best possible and reliable sources of information although the need for news papers and magazines as outlived its time because why leave the house to go buy a news paper or a magazine with limited information??? When with just a click of a button you can surf the media networks and find news relating to your specific interests. Journalists can't be phased out by social media but news papers and magazines definitely have or are being phased out by the large growing use of social media networks daily.

      Journalists are not always credible source of information we'd like to think that but its not the case.Journalists no doubt have access to so Social media to gain information,but by the journalist gaining information through social media is'nt that abit too late ?because the news is already going viral on social media with Social media we read it straight from the horses mouth as i gave the example of Kim Kardahian above ....no doubt journalists cannot be phased out but at this this point in time they are slowly becoming unneeded because the public focuses more on what is said on social media then on a newspapwer or magazine for that matter.

    That's so true Samke I don't think we need journalists anymore because people have become their own journalists, its just a matter of time before we hear that there is no more jobs for journalists these days people post what they want when they want. For example me I read news online and not on newspapers and most of the time before a issue is broadcasted on TV or published on papers it is already viral on social media so I think we don't need journalists anymore.

    You are totally right. Why do we need journalists when we already have social media to get information. With Twitter for instance, we can easily find any latest news.

      Yes,with social media we are updated almost everyhour and with journalists we still have to wait for their publications ,i know i dont't wait...

    I think that journalists are still relevant even though, i would prefer to get my news via social media. but being a PR student, i believe that we need to be in contact with journalists as most of the brand we'll one day represent might not be on social media

      But as Public relations practitioners we can be our own journalists as well no needing journalists all the time.
